Summary from Goodreads
Jason has a problem. He doesn't remember anything before waking up on a school bus holding hands with a girl. Apparently, she's his girlfriend Piper, his best friend is a kid named Leo, and they're all students in the Wilderness School, a boarding school for "bad kids." What he did to end up here, Jason has no idea-except that everything seems very wrong.
Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, and her vivid nightmares reveal that he's in terrible danger. Now her boyfriend doesn't recognize her, and when a freak storm and strange creatures attack during a school field trip, she, Jason, and Leo are whisked away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood. What is going on?
Leo has a way with tools. His new cabin at Camp Half-Blood is filled with them. Seriously, the place beats Wilderness School hands down, with its weapons training, monsters, and fine-looking girls. What's troubling is the curse everyone keeps talking about, and that a camper's gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist they are all-including Leo-related to a god.
Rick Riordan, the best-selling author of the Percy Jackson series, pumps up the action and suspense in The Lost Hero, the first book in The Heroes of Olympus series. Fans of demi-gods, prophesies, and quests will be left breathless--and panting for Book Two.
Personal thoughts going in
I had already known about Rick Riordan having read the Percy Jackson series last year. I finished them this year, and then I took a break to read some other series. I found that I was missing the world and his writing, so I made the decision to read the next series of books. From the back cover, I knew this would about some new characters that I didn’t read about yet.
What I liked
The plot of the novel overall. I found it original, and while it was like Percy Jackson in many ways, I thought that it had a uniqueness to this series. I did enjoy the Mythology aspect if it, as I do with all work by this author. The plot had enough similarities that you can tell it's set within the same universe, but it had things that are exclusive to this series which I loved.
The characters in this book were great. I loved the journey that each of them went on. I felt like the characters in this novel had a lot of growth, and that they really went through some changes as people. These characters read like real people, yes, a little young but that’s the point that they’re supposed to be young for the people reading the book. They acted the way that kids their age would act.
What I didn’t like
The one thing that I didn’t like about this book was that I thought it had pacing issues. It was action, and then it had some details, followed by more action. During the details, parts are when I felt like I was just reading for the sake of reading. I do love detail, as you might be able to tell, but I wished that this book had more action.
