Theatrical Thursday- In The Heights Movie Review

Hi! In The Heights is a new movie musical that came out recently. I wanted to write my thoughts into a review so you could all know what I thought. For some background, I enjoy the musical In The Heights, and I saw it once on Broadway. I enjoy the characters and the story, so my expectations going into this were high. This film exceeded my expectations and I really loved this movie.  This is my favorite movie musical in the last decade. I would rate this movie 5 stars but would give more. Read on to see my thoughts on the film. See the film in theaters or on HBO Max!

Characters

In The Heights is a story that tells the story of Washington Heights. The characters are the heartbeat of the story, and they were excellently crafted on screen. I love In The Heights because of the characters, and while I do have favorites, I love a lot of the characters. Going in, I was worried about how the story would adapt because the characters are originally from a stage musical, so was hesitant as to how they would transfer to the screen. Within the first number of the movie, they put all the doubts I had out of my mind. A movie musical is about the balance of all the elements and at no moment here did I think the characters of the movie felt like they were outshining the other elements.

Plot

A story that follows the lives of a neighborhood can be tough because it can read as boring. Part of the heart and charm of this movie is the story of for me. This is a story about family and the friends that you treat as found family. There are several subplots woven into the major story, and I thought the movie did an excellent job of weaving all the stories into the film. My favorite storyline is the one that follows my favorite character Nina because both in the stage musical, and the movie, Nina goes on a journey and I loved seeing how that was portrayed on film. While her story might be updated and changed a bit, I believe the essence of story and her character is still the same. I also love the main storyline with Usnavi and Vanessa and seeing their romance.

Cinematography

I thought I would give this star in my review because I loved the cinematography and the direction. Jon M. Chu, who directed Crazy Ritch Asians, was the director of this movie as well. I loved all the directorial choices, and I thought that he definitely put his stamp on the movie, without taking away from what the original story was. The group numbers were big and bright, and part of that was because of the cinematography. Smaller numbers were more intimate and played a big role in the storytelling. Again this was all thanks to the expert cinematography.

Performances

I’m going to keep this section short because I loved all the performances. I thought the actors were fantastic, and they sang the music expertly. A movie likes on the actors to tell the story, and this story was told fantastically by the actors' performances.

Enjoyment

I enjoyed this story so much that there was no way I would not give an enjoyment star in my review. All the elements combined for a great movie that I loved and would see again and again.

Dislikes

I had one element that I didn’t like about this film. In the stage musical, Nina’s mom Camila is present. I know why the choice to not have her in the movie was made but I still think she could have been in the movie.

Top Ten Tuesday- Holiday / Seasonal Freebie- Memorable characters of 2020

Hi! Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by Jana  @thatartsyreadergirl . This meme was born out of a love of lists and bringing the book blogging community together. Every week, Jana will post a topic, and we book bloggers will post a reply to the topic. This week, it's a seasonal / winter freebie. I kind of went rogue in a way. In the winter you see the end of the year best-of lists, and that's exactly what I did with this post. You will find subsections to indicate the genre each book is in.  YA Contemporary 1- Pepper from Tweet Cute by Emma Lord Tweet Cute was a novel I read in September. I fell hard for the major character, Pepper. She was so sweet, and she wanted so much to lice her own life.  As a bonus, she baked, and I seem to really love characters who bake. Pepper made this list because she wanted to live her own life for her, and I really admire that quality in a person. 2- Sophie from 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston I’m in the middle of this book right now, but I ...

Top Ten Tuesday- characters that remind me of myself

Welcome back to Top Ten Tuesday! This is a weekly meme where readers discuss ten or whatever number you would like to have based on a prompt. Our host is Jana at  thatartsyreadergirl . Our topic this week is Characters Like Myself. I am going to take a two words that each character has in in my opinion,  and discuss how that relates to me  as well. 1- Cather Avery from Fangirl Writer- At her core, Cath is a writer, and she loves her stories. I am a writer of both Fan Fiction and original stories like Cath so this was an automatic in for this. Both of us love our work and we tend to through ourselves whole hardheartedly into our work. Sisters- I might have mentioned this on the blog before but I have a younger sister and we’re only roughly 18 months a part. Cath and her twin sister Wren are polar  opposites and this is me and my sister. My younger sister is an extrovert and into science. I on the other hand,  am an introverted creative bookworm.  ...

Top Ten Tuesday - Unpopular Bookish opinions

Welcome Back! Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by  thatartsyreadergirl . This week the top is unpopular bookish opinions, was submitted by Kaitlin Galvan at  somehowimanageablog . I don't think I have that many unpopular opinions, but We'll see if I can get to ten. I do not mean this to be a personal attack. I know some of these will get into beloved areas of book community, so take these as just my opinions. 1- I have only read one Harry Potter book, and will probably never read the rest. Yes, I know how odd this makes me sound. I was a Twilight kid, and I preferred those over Harry Potter. I have see all the movies, and I want to read Fantastic Beast, as I believe I will love that world and those characters more. 2- I hate mystery and horror novels. I know how odd this might sound to some people. I'm just not a fan because they creep me out and I am more skittish than most people. This is a beloved genre, so I think this is an Unpopular opinion? The exception to thi...
