Musical Monday’s Oklahoma

Hello! As you may know, on Monday’s on the blog I do a series of blogs I call Musical Monday’s. This started off as a series where I would feature lesser known musicals I loved that others might not know. Since the creation of this series, I have expanded to musicals that are more popular and widely known. This week, I wanted to discuss my thoughts on Oklahoma.

plot 4/5

Yes, I know that this musical has problematic plot points with Jud, which is why I docked a full star off my rating. Our plot follows two lovers, Laurey and Curly and I enjoy their relationship. When I go to a musical, or get into a musical I look for a plot element I can fall in love with. With the case of Oklahoma, it is the romance and the tale of young lovers. The other relationship in the musical is Ado Annie and Will, this is another couple whose relationship I enjoy. Family is a common theme found in Oklahoma with Laurey’s aunt and I love how much those two characters care about each other. The family aspect of this musical is so sweet and one thing that brings me make to this musical over and over. Now, there is the plot element I don’t enjoy, and this lies with the character of Jud, so I don’t enjoy his story line at all.

characters 4/5

Favorite characters- Ado Annie, and Laurey.
Is it fair to doc an entire star because I dislike the antagonist so much? Probably not but I will, anyway. First, I want to talk about the characters I love in this musical. I love Ado Annie’s zest for life and her spirit. She’s a little wild but not to the point where she could be called a rebel, or even a wild child, she just lives her life the way she wants. Laurey is such a gentle and sweet character. Whether with her family, friends, or with Curly, she is so sweet and kind to other people. In a musical with some tough characters, Laurey’s gentleness is welcome. She is the one that I most relate to within this musical. I enjoy Curly as a character, and while he is the hero of the story, I also find him flawed. Jud is a character who I really can’t stand as I find him abusive, and I don’t think he is a match for Laurey or anyone, really.

music 5/5

Favorite songs- Many A New Day, I Cain’t Say No, The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, The Farmer and the Cowman, All Er Nuthin’ and Oklahoma. I have enjoyed this musical for years but I didn’t really fall in love with it until the cast recording of the current revival was released. This revival has a blue grass band sound where a full band usually is used. The melodies in this show I love, and I go around humming and singing the songs all day long. The music is a classic and yet feels fresh and new because of the way the new revival presents the score.

lyrics 5/5

The lyrics are some of the best things about this musical. The lyrics are very well crafted and suit the music really well. Some of my favorite lyrics are found in this show. At no point do I think the lyrics outshine the music.

What are your thoughts on Oklahoma? Let me know!

  1. It really is a good old classic. By the way, I was just in London and we saw the musical "Come From Away" about the towns in Newfoundland that took in the thousands of people stranded on 9/11. Absolutely the MOST amazing thing I've ever seen! Highly recommended if you ever get the chance.

Top Ten Tuesday- Holiday / Seasonal Freebie- Memorable characters of 2020

Hi! Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by Jana  @thatartsyreadergirl . This meme was born out of a love of lists and bringing the book blogging community together. Every week, Jana will post a topic, and we book bloggers will post a reply to the topic. This week, it's a seasonal / winter freebie. I kind of went rogue in a way. In the winter you see the end of the year best-of lists, and that's exactly what I did with this post. You will find subsections to indicate the genre each book is in.  YA Contemporary 1- Pepper from Tweet Cute by Emma Lord Tweet Cute was a novel I read in September. I fell hard for the major character, Pepper. She was so sweet, and she wanted so much to lice her own life.  As a bonus, she baked, and I seem to really love characters who bake. Pepper made this list because she wanted to live her own life for her, and I really admire that quality in a person. 2- Sophie from 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston I’m in the middle of this book right now, but I ...

Top Ten Tuesday –Favorite Couples (Valentine’s Day /Love Freebie)

Hi! Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by Jana @ thatartsyreadergirl. . This meme was born out of a love of lists and bringing the book blogging community together. I love doing this meme because it gives me a chance to bond with other bloggers. Every week, Jana will post a topic, and we bloggers will make a post with our list on the topic, or a different one. This week it was Valentines / Love, so I wanted to do a post on favorite couples. I may have done a similar post last year, but I know that there are some new couples on this list.  1- Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy- Pride & Prejudice   This is the only classic couple on this list. I enjoy their relationship because the two characters have little in common, and yet by the end of the novel, they make it work. As you read Pride & Prejudice, you get to see these two find the love each of them was missing. 2- Cath and Levi–Fangirl One of my favorite YA novels needed to appear on this list. I love Cath and Levi becau...

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Historical

Welcome back to Top Ten Tuesday! Our Host is Jana @thatartsyreadergirl . Every week, readers gather and respond to the topic of  the week. This week, we are talking about Top Ten Books in our favorite genre. I love The Classics, YA of all kinds minus Horror and Mystery, and Historical. I choose Historical as I talk about Classics and YA a lot on this blog. These are in no order, just as they came to me. 1- Romanov  by Nadine Brandes I read this Anastasia retelling in nineteen days when it came out. I loved this book so much! About half the novel was the Romanov’s in exile, and their life in a house where they couldn’t do that much. As the story progresses, we see that Nastya is a spell master, so this is how Fantasy is sprinkled in with the Historical Fiction to tell a new story. I loved all aspects of this novel, even the ones that were sad, and almost caused me to throw this book across the room. I will review this book later on this month. I recommend this for any...
